Barn Swallow
Hirundo rustica Apr–Sep
Perhaps the most iconic of the swallows, this bird is dark blue on top with a ruddy patch near the beak and a warm tan color below. They are swift agile fliers, able to change direction rapidly, and can often be seen in open areas since they feed on insects while in flight. As the name suggests, these birds have adapted to take advantage of human structures and use them as nesting sites, including under bridges and eaves. The nest is made with mud and dried grass, similar in shape to a rounded cup.
