Black-capped Chickadee

Poecile atricapillus

A small, lively little bird that is commonly found in wooded areas and at backyard feeders, they prefer nesting in existing cavities or by making their own in soft rotted wood. Chickadees have a complex system of communication, conveying information about themselves to nearby flocks and calling out alarms. Other similarly sized species, such as the Tufted Titmouse and warblers can be found mingling with these bold birds. They do not migrate and can be seen year-round.
