Brant

Branta bernicla Oct–May

A small goose with a similar coloring to the Canada Goose, but with a black neck, head, and chest. The neck is shorter and has white markings below the head, making it appear to be wearing a collar or necklace. They can be seen in large flocks, often on the water in coastal areas, feasting on aquatic vegetation as they migrate south from their breeding grounds in the Arctic. Sabine Point Park is a good place to observe these birds foraging in shallow water.
