Chipping Sparrow

Spizella passerina Apr–Nov

A native North American sparrow that is migratory, this bird can be seen in Rhode Island starting in the spring as the weather becomes warmer and then travels back south for the winter. Its most distinguishing feature is the rusty cap on the top of its head, along with its song, which consists of rapid-fire chips that blend into a trill lasting about four seconds without changing pitch.
