Common Raven
Corvus corax
Often confused with a crow as both have black plumage, there are noticeable differences between the two. Most obvious is the size, where the Raven is much larger and bulkier, being almost twice the size of a crow. The middle feather of the Raven's tail is also longer, making it appear wedge shaped in flight, while the crow's tail is a fan shape. Ravens also have a deeper croaky call that can be heard over long distances. They are one of the most intelligent birds in the world, sometimes working together to find food and even understand cause and effect. Once common in New England, Ravens were targeted by settlers due to superstitious beliefs and being considered pests. However, they have made a strong comeback in recent decades.
