Golden-crowned Kinglet

Regulus satrapa Sep–Apr

With a bright yellow stripe on top of its head, bordered on either side by black, this kinglet is also easily recognized by it's signature high pitched song see-see-see-see-SEE-SEE-SEE that turns into a cascade of rapidly repeated notes before petering out. They do not travel quite as far north as the Ruby-crowned, but breed mostly in parts of Canada. An additional distinguishing feature of these two energetic birds is the white markings around the eyes. The Golden-crowned has horizontal white bars, making the bird appear to have white eyebrows, while the Ruby-crowned has white arcs shaped like parentheses framing the eye.
