Hairy Woodpecker
Leuconotopicus villosus
A bill almost the same length as that of its head is one of the main distinguishing features between the Hairy and the Downy Woodpecker. The Downy has a much shorter bill, one that is the smallest of all woodpeckers in proportion to its head. The other difference is that the Hairy is about 50% larger in size, but the almost identical black-and-white patterning and red patch on the back of the head (the red is only seen in the males) can make clear identification challenging.
