Hooded Merganser

Lophodytes cucullatus Oct–Dec

The smallest of the mergansers found in North America, the male has a distinctive black head with a crest that can be raised or lowered. When raised, a bold white patch is visible and makes the head look comically large. The female is brown in color and has a spikier crest shape to the head.
