House Finch
Haemorhous mexicanus
A common bird in residential areas and feeders, they are easily recognized thanks to a red head and breast that fades into a brown body. Their primary food sources are plants, seeds, and fruits, with black oil sunflower seeds being a favorite. They can be confused with the Purple Finch, which has a similar coloring, shape and size. As individuals vary in color within each species, this makes identification extra tricky. But in general, House Finches are much more common and widespread. One of the main differences between the two is that the House Finch tends to be a warmer red and the Purple Finch exhibits a cooler magenta tinge to the feathers.
