Kildeer

Charadrius vociferus

This plover is widespread and can be found in areas far from the ocean. They are bold birds, with black double bars on the chest, large eyes ringed by orange, and rusty brown rump which is visible in flight. Their diet consists of a variety of insects and invertebrates, and they have a distinctive way of walking rapidly over short distances, stopping to take a bite, and doing this on repeat. The name is an approximation of the high-pitched call they produce, often as they take flight when startled.
