Red-bellied Woodpecker

Melanerpes carolinus

A very vocal woodpecker, their loud rolling call can often be heard in wooded areas. The name is misleading as the belly is only slightly rosy, whereas the red on the head is much more noticeable. It appears as if the bird is wearing a red cap that extends all the way down to the black-and-white patterning of the back. Females have a smaller red patch on the back of the head, while the crown is a pale gray, making them appear balding.
