Song Sparrow

Melospiza melodia

A common sparrow in Rhode Island, this native species has noticeable brown streaks running down its breast. Unlike the House Sparrow, they are solitary and do not travel in flocks. This sparrow can sit in one spot and sing for many minutes without fleeing if you don't startle them. Males are often the ones singing in order to attract a mate. As this sparrow matures, it copies the songs produced by other adult sparrows nearby, using them to form its own unique patterns.
