Tree Swallow
Tachycineta bicolor May–Nov
With iridescent dark blue feathers on top and white below, this swallow has a very dapper appearance. As with others in the swallow family, these birds are expert fliers and feed on insects. They get their name for their preference of nesting in tree cavities, but also seem fine with using nesting boxes. In the fall when they migrate south to winter in areas near the Gulf of Mexico, they can form enormous flocks numbering hundreds of thousands.
